Challenges in Fighting Fake News and Abuse on Social Media

While social media has connected billions of people across the globe and removed boundaries, fake news and abuse are real issues that impact trust and use of the social media platforms. At it’s worst, spread of fake news can impact the democratic process. Abuse on social media platforms can also give rise to bullying by fringe elements and preventing genuine conversations. Given the increasing amount of polarization in the world today, crowd sourced enforcement is not a scalable way of catching fake news and abuse. This panel will discuss what makes detection of fake news and abuse a hard problem and the role of AI and machine learning in proactive detection and action.
